['hɑːtwəl], Leland H., amerikanischer Genetiker, * Los Angeles (Kalifornien) 30. 10. 1939; arbeitet seit 1973 an der University of Washington und ist seit 1997 Präsident und Direktor des Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center der University of Washington in Seattle, einem der führenden Krebszentren der USA. Hartwell entdeckte eine Kategorie von Genen, die den Zellzyklus kontrollieren. Eines dieser Gene hat eine zentrale Funktion bei Beginn eines jeden neuen Zellzyklus und wird deshalb Start genannt. Durch die Einführung des Begriffs Kontrollstation (checkpoint) vermittelte er eine neue Perspektive des Zellzyklus. Hartwell erhielt mit T. R. Hunt und P. M. Nurse 2001 den Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin.
